What's New in Mbox Viewer 2.8.4 for Mac: Hand Over Only What Has To Be Handed Over

Mbox Viewer 2.8.4 is out on the Mac App Store, and it closes a gap that had been open since the first version: you could read a huge archive, search it and print from it — but you could not take a handful of messages out of it.

As always, the app is read-only. Nothing here modifies the archive you opened.

Export your selection as a new MBOX

Pick the messages that matter — by search, by Gmail label or one by one — and the app writes them into a brand-new MBOX that contains only those.

That is the delivery step of a legal hold or a public-records request. The archive used to be something you looked at; what the other side actually asks for is these messages, and nothing else. Now you narrow a 40 GB mailbox down to the three hundred that are in scope and produce a file with exactly those in it, in a format anything can open.

The original is never touched: the export writes a new file and leaves the archive exactly as it found it. It is the mirror image of merging, which has been there since 2.8.2 — one puts mailboxes together, the other takes a slice out.

The free plan goes from 500 MB to 1 GB

Same app, same features, no time limit — twice the room before Pro comes into it. If you tried Mbox Viewer with a Takeout export and bounced off the ceiling, the file that didn’t fit last month may well fit now.

Pro is what it always was: a one-time in-app purchase that removes the size limit for good. No subscription, no account, no licence server.

And an edition for schools and universities

There is now a separate edition for institutions: Mbox Viewer Pro for Education — the same app with everything unlocked permanently, bought by the seat in Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager and deployed by MDM. No in-app purchases to chase, no licence keys, no accounts and nothing that expires.

Getting it

2.8.4 arrives as a normal update in the Mac App Store. The Windows app got the export and the 1 GB limit the same day, and a printing fix right after — that one has its own post. The full list, release by release, is on the changelog.
