Mbox Viewer for Windows 2.8.4 and 2.8.5: Exporting a Selection, and Printing That Finally Says Who Wrote

Two updates landed on the Microsoft Store in two days. 2.8.4 brings the Windows app level with the Mac one, and 2.8.5, out the next day, fixes a printing defect that had been there since the first Windows release — reported by a customer through the support form and shipped the same day it was sent.

The app is read-only, as always. Nothing below modifies the archive you open.

Export your selection as a new MBOX

Pick the messages that matter — by search, by Gmail label or one by one — and the app writes them into a brand-new MBOX containing only those.

That is the delivery step of a legal hold or a public-records request: you narrow a 40 GB mailbox down to the three hundred messages that are actually in scope and produce a file with exactly those in it. The original archive is never modified — the export writes a new file beside it.

Printing an email now carries its header

Until 2.8.5, printing left out the subject, the date and who the message was from and to. Ctrl+P sent the message body to the printer on its own, because the app draws those fields in the interface, next to the body, where the print engine never sees them. The page began mid-message.

What made it hard to spot: on a forwarded email the headers of the quoted message did come out, so it looked as though only the first one was missing.

Printing now produces the same document as Export → To PDF…: subject, From, To, Cc and date at the top, separated from the body, and the attachment list at the foot. It was a Windows-only defect, present since the first version; macOS never had it.

And a related one: messages with no subject can be printed too. The button used to check the subject to decide whether a message was selected, so with an empty one it simply did nothing.

Ctrl+P now goes through your PDF viewer

Ctrl+P opens the email as a PDF in your system viewer, and you print from there — with a real preview of what will come out of the printer, and the option to save the file or pass it on. That used to be handwork: export to PDF, find the file, open it. It is one step now.

The content stays as sealed off as it is on screen: no JavaScript and not a single network request, printing included.

Getting them

Both arrive as normal updates from the Microsoft Store. The Mac app got the export and the 1 GB limit the same day as 2.8.4, along with an edition for schools — that one has its own post. The full list, release by release, is on the changelog.
